I believe that the shiny crystal shader is reflecting the scene in an incredibly complex way. The two factors that affect this the most are: It seems like for whatever reason, they could not get this effect to not tank the framerate. The Soul Burst effect seems to be the biggest offender, performance-wise - which is made worse by it being one of the most-used game mechanics. I was initially happy to be able to have everything set to max, but it quickly became apparent that certain effects are very problematic. You might notice that you can crank the graphics pretty high for most gameplay. Of course, there are things we can do to optimise this (lower resolution screen buffer, adaptive resolution, low res VFX buffers, more efficient shaders) and the game seems to be TRYING to do something (FPS Priority Mode implies that it's lowering resolution), but it's clearly not doing it enough, and some of these effects are dangerously unoptimised. All of this has to be calculated for every pixel that the effect covers, so increasing the screen resolution will have a huge effect on game performance when this effect is active - moreso than for just rendering the environment, for example. Some graphics effects, especially complex VFX/shaders that use lots of overdraw or sample the screen multiple times don't just have a linear effect on performance, but can have an exponential one as the game resolution increases.įor example, let's say my effect has to sample the screen buffer 3 times and draw 10 layers of transparency. I haven't tried multiplayer yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if this caused desync issues.Setting target to 60 is much better for me. Framerate targetting 120 seems to make the slowdown WAY worse on these. It's not just a low framerate, but the game itself goes into slow-mo.The biggest graphics drain is the Soul Burst/finisher - something about that effect causes HUGE slowdown.Targeting 120 makes slow-down issues much worse.Screen Space Reflections are also very expensive - made worse by Resolution Scaling.I have graphics set to max, but with lower res scaling. Out of all of the graphics settings, resolution scaling makes the biggest difference.Brightness seems to be very low, so I'm cranking that up.Motion blur is way too strong so I turned that off.Desktop PCs might exhibit different or no issues at all.

Just a disclaimer - I didn't work on this game and I'm basing these findings on 30 minutes of experimentation with the day 1 PC version on a laptop with a 3080. I'm a game VFX artist, so I'm relatively familiar with the issues here and will try to briefly explain what I'm seeing. I just wanted to post my thoughts on the performance of the game - why it is the way it is, and what settings you can use to maximise your enjoyment. And put the creator name in the title so we know who made it. When posting non-OC fanart, make sure to leave a comment with a link to the artist. Spoilers have to be tagged since not everyone has played the game yet or hasn't gotten to that area in the game yet.
